The Common Core Standards for Mathematics are the following: Counting and Cardinality, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Measurement and Data, and Geometry. Students will be engaged in activities and projects that teach and reinforce the concepts from these standards during Circle Time, minilessons, Centers, and teacherdirected games.
Students will be introduced to a variety of math manipulatives to assist them with counting objects and understanding the relationship between numbers and quantities to 10. We will spend 10 consecutive weeks working on a Number of the Week. There will be activities, games, projects, and homework to provide a variety of ways to practice this skill. Mathematical terms such as more, less, greater than, fewer, first, and last are included in our interactions.
Addition and Subtraction (up to 10) will be taught with an emphasis on solving word problems dealing with practical situations. Students will learn to copy and extend simple patterns with manipulatives.
Objects will be examined for measurable attributes such as length and weight. Students will use correct vocabulary such as small, big, short, tall, empty, full, heavy, and light. They will sort objects into categories and count the numbers of objects.
We will review basic shapes such as triangle, square, circle, rectangle, diamond, star, heart, and oval. Students will identify shapes and name their attributes. They will describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as top, bottom, up, down, in front of, behind, over, under, and next to. We will also analyze, compare, and sort twodimensional and threedimensional shapes and objects.
